Hostel trailer analysis

At what point in the trailer are we told the name of the film? Why is this?

We are told the name of the film at the end of the trailer, as the audience is more likely to remember the title of the film therefore it sticks in their head and then there more likely to go and see it, it also leaves the audience in anticipation to what the title of the film is especially if they really enjoyed the trailer.

Why are we told who is starring in the film?

We are told who is starring in the film, as well known actors and actresses are first to show up on the screen during a trailer, as big names may well attract an audience on its own due to them maybe being in past well known films that were very successful. In Hostel however the, we are not told who is starring in the film as there not known, which may well be on purpose to make the film come across more realistic as your not recognising the actors and actresses therefore it seems more like ordinary people. The fact that the trailer also does not show who is in the film, makes in seem more scary as its not like a typical trailer with all the names of the actors and actresses shown, which would remind you that it is only a film.

How is this information given to us? Why?

The information about the film is given to the audience in parts during clips of the of the film, this allows the audience to take in the information and it is more effective if there is more action shown rather than writing, as action speaks more than words. The bits of writing flashes up on a complete black background and the same type of graphics are used through out in order to keep a theme going. The writing flashes up like a light bulb flickering and then gradually fades out and then the next clip vigorously flashes up. This all creates and sets a dark atmosphere, perfect for the horror theme. The words used in hostel, are key words linked to the film e.g. torture, punishment etc. They also set the atmosphere and lets the audience know what the film contains and what it is about.

What type of action from the film do we see?

Alot of violence is shown through torturing people, like close up of  a toe that is being chopped off, there is alot off long shots of people sitting in chairs with a person dressed in dark clothing standing over them and there identity is not revealed. Shots of doors shutting symbolises being trapped and that there is no way out. The audience is shown scenes of distressed and extreme violence through torturing

What clues does the music give us as to what type of film the trailer is advertising?

The music used is very dark and eery which suggests that it is horror themed and the music gradually builds up, alongside the action. The main instrument used is violins and it it very dramatic, to suggest that there is alot of action involved. At one point the music stops completely and all that can be heard is a high pitched scream
