Hostel trailer analysis

At what point in the trailer are we told the name of the film? Why is this?

We are told the name of the film at the end of the trailer, as the audience is more likely to remember the title of the film therefore it sticks in their head and then there more likely to go and see it, it also leaves the audience in anticipation to what the title of the film is especially if they really enjoyed the trailer.

Why are we told who is starring in the film?

We are told who is starring in the film, as well known actors and actresses are first to show up on the screen during a trailer, as big names may well attract an audience on its own due to them maybe being in past well known films that were very successful. In Hostel however the, we are not told who is starring in the film as there not known, which may well be on purpose to make the film come across more realistic as your not recognising the actors and actresses therefore it seems more like ordinary people. The fact that the trailer also does not show who is in the film, makes in seem more scary as its not like a typical trailer with all the names of the actors and actresses shown, which would remind you that it is only a film.

How is this information given to us? Why?

The information about the film is given to the audience in parts during clips of the of the film, this allows the audience to take in the information and it is more effective if there is more action shown rather than writing, as action speaks more than words. The bits of writing flashes up on a complete black background and the same type of graphics are used through out in order to keep a theme going. The writing flashes up like a light bulb flickering and then gradually fades out and then the next clip vigorously flashes up. This all creates and sets a dark atmosphere, perfect for the horror theme. The words used in hostel, are key words linked to the film e.g. torture, punishment etc. They also set the atmosphere and lets the audience know what the film contains and what it is about.

What type of action from the film do we see?

Alot of violence is shown through torturing people, like close up of  a toe that is being chopped off, there is alot off long shots of people sitting in chairs with a person dressed in dark clothing standing over them and there identity is not revealed. Shots of doors shutting symbolises being trapped and that there is no way out. The audience is shown scenes of distressed and extreme violence through torturing

What clues does the music give us as to what type of film the trailer is advertising?

The music used is very dark and eery which suggests that it is horror themed and the music gradually builds up, alongside the action. The main instrument used is violins and it it very dramatic, to suggest that there is alot of action involved. At one point the music stops completely and all that can be heard is a high pitched scream

Magazine analysis

Magazine analysis

The main focus of this poster is quite clearly Johnny Depp because of the fact that he’s the main image on this poster and his name is in capitals. This is possibly because he is considered to be a big star in the world of film. The film that has the most coverage on this cover is “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. This may attract a different kind of audience to this specific magazine than the usual because “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” is a film that is mainly aimed at children. The colours and background of this magazine cover which is of green grass and flowers, suggests that this is the spring issue. This red, circular kind of stamp draws the audience’s eye in and shows us the possible content this magazine may have in it. This demonstrates what else is featured in this magazine if someone wants to have a closer look. This appears to be the tagline of the magazine, because it is underneath the title. It also has persuasive qualities about it, which makes the reader want to purchase the magazine.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media texts?

After analysing teaser trailers and researched the elements that make a good teaser trailer, and what conventions audiences look for in a horror, made it much more easier in gaining a better understanding of what it expected. When researching i found that horror trailers that are in my genre start of at a slow pace and then gradually build up with speed to help increase the tension and suspense. The trailers i analysed were based in dark locations, and therefore i used this idea and shot my trailer at night and used different tones of dark lighting in order to create an atmosphere which is vital.  When looking at other horror trailers I looked at the ways in which they created tension, anxiety, fear and mystery. I incorporated the idea of “Stephen King’s It” into my trailer, as I liked the idea of a clown as the face paint and costume made the villain mysterious with its hidden identity. I seen many horror films in which used this idea of the mask covering the villains face e.g. Friday the 13th, Halloween, Chainsaw massacre etc.  The idea of a clown is a kind of oxymoron, as the original idea of a clown is happy, comical and brings joy whereas the clown in this case has been used to create a threatening, fearful character. The music in Stephen King’s ‘It’ is circus themed and is very lively and jolly, even though it’s being used to represent the presence of the clown, and of who is a dark and sinister character. In my trailer, I used a piece of music in the beginning called ‘Gagool’ from the royalty free site. It includes the instruments Contrabass Bassoon, oboe, violins and percussion, which creates an eerie, suspenseful, mysterious atmosphere. It also in some senses adds a mischievous tone to the trailer, as I used the music to co-alongside with the shot of the eye looking through the key hole and the woman sitting on a seat. A main theme in my trailer is the idea of being watched, as during my trailer I have the eye looking through the key hole, the clown looking through the window, the woman standing in the doorway watching the child playing on the floor. There were many films that i looked at to see how they created this idea, such as ‘Peeping Tom’, which uses many point of view shots in order to give the film an creepy and eerie atmosphere. This idea in my trailer does not reveal  who the actual sinister characters are, therefore it leaves it open to suggestion, due to the way I have filmed the shots and put them together. The shots do not really tell a story, as I learned that it was important not to give away too much of the plot, so i used shots that would suggest several different themes. I originally had the boy in the trailer with no mask, but then decided to make the kid a mysterious character which supports this idea of not knowing who the villain is once again. I also looked into the idea of the film child’s play and the idea of the doll coming alive. I used this idea and had the clown in my film that appeared to look like a doll that would sit with the rest of the clown ornaments. I believed that this made my trailer more eerie, as I know from doing personal research that a lot of people feel really unnerved by clown dolls and ornaments including myself. I also looked into the film Friday the 13th and saw that the main character was wearing a mask as a way of hiding his identity. I then combined the idea of the doll and person with the mask to create my idea which would be a person who poses as a doll and uses the mask to hide his identity.

For the second part of my trailer I used a second song from the royalty free website called Tenebrous Brothers carnival, which seems to have a circus theme style to it as it’s very jolly and lively, which is created by the instruments such as the Organ, Percussion, Glock, voice, Clarinet, Strings and Tuba. I used this style of music as I believed that it worked well in ‘It’ as it creates a dark, eerie, mysterious and unnerving atmosphere. I used this music in the second part of my trailer as this is the scenes that reveal more action and violence, so in a way the music contradicts the action. This idea was inspired by the trailer ‘clockwork orange’, where the music is very lively and is of the classical style, but the action being shown is off a violent nature. Also the trailer uses many snapshots therefore it does not tell a coherent story or reveal much of the plot. I set my my trailer in the location of a house, as it proved most popular in the results of the questionnaires. I looked at trailer such as ‘Amityville’  which uses many shots of different areas of the location in order to set an creepy and eerie atmosphere, perfect for basis of what’s to be expected.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary task?

I believe that my trailer was successful in building up suspense, as I’ve used many close up shots of scary ornaments and I’ve used shots in which I have left them silent without music for example the ticking clock that adds a kind of eeriness, right before the final scene where the curtains are torn open. I used the sound of a heartbeat to add to the suspense of approaching the closed curtains. I cut towards the end of the shot so that it goes black before the thing behind the curtains is revealed therefore leaving the audience wanting to know what it was. I also used a terrifying scream when the screen goes black, after the curtains have been pulled back, in order to highlight the idea of whatever was behind the curtain was something terrifying. I used the ‘whose this?’ shot as a transition for the change in music. I originally had this shot as a close up shot of the photograph, but then changed it to a long shot in order not to reveal who it was in the photo, therefore once again making the audience wanting to know more. During the shot of the keyhole I put a breathing noise over it, as it created a monster like impression with the heavy breathing therefore making it more sinister as well as suggesting that the person is in a small space therefore maybe hiding. It also makes the audience feel more involved as they feel as if there looking through keyhole aswell. The use of the keyhole creates the idea of suspicion and it could even mean two things: Either something is hiding from something, or someone is watching someone, therefore it being a teaser trailer you would have to watch the film to find out what is the case in this situation. I used an over the shoulder shot in scene where the clown pushes the woman through a door, as it makes the audience feel safe as there behind the clown rather than being in it’s view and trapped by it, but then also makes us feel threat and fear for the other characters. I used several point of view shots in order to add to the idea of being watching or watching something.

I believed that my magazine cover is very effective as the image of the clown is very sinister and scary looking. I used the colour tools in Photoshop in order to empathise the red on the clown image as the colour red can represent several things such as hell, blood, gore, anger which will be the themes related to my film. I also faded the colours of the clown suit as before they were really rich and bright, but then I made them more worn out and drab looking in order to create the idea of the clown being sinister and almost dead like.  I used a variety of different formats and prints on the magazine, in order to distinct the certain areas of the magazine from each other e.g. parts such as ‘Free Dvd’ in a bigger font as it will be a factor that will entice a person into buying it.  I used the yellow writing for the headings as its the main colour associated with clowns and is a happy colour, which obviously contradicts the idea of my trailer which is portraying scenes of horror. The title i have made an icy blue, with its name being ‘Chiller’, as obviously it’s a cold colour and people get the shivers when there scared. I have made the title font different and bigger from the rest in order for it to stand out. I have used a childish font which works well with the type of film it is, as the tag line of the film is ‘its play- time’ and clowns are associated with entertaining kids and bringing them joy, but i have put this yellow writing onto a black background. The black represents darkness and misery, therefore i have combined the two themes contradict each other one again which is obviously relevant to the theme of my film. I have also used the black background as it doesn’t distract us from the image of the clown and everything else seems to stand out more e.g. the red present on the clown. I didn't use too many different colours in the magazine front cover as i didn't want to make it fussy or over the top. In only kept with the one image as i didn’t want to distract the viewer from the main feature.

The poster i have kept simple with the clown being the main focus. I have once again kept the background dark, in order to maintain this focus, but you can also work out that the clown is standing in the middle of a street suggesting that there are many people who may be at risk.  I faded the image of the street in the background in order to give the poster a unique appeal and makes the clown stand out. I put a glint in the eye of the clown, in order to make it more creepy looking and once again i highlighted  the red. I used the colour yellow again as an on going theme that is present in both trailer, poster and magazine.  The tag line ‘its play-time’ suggests that the trailer will be compact will action as ‘play-time’ is word suggested with fun and in some senses chaos. I have made the clown in the poster to look as if its directly staring at the audience, suggesting that the clown is a threat to all. I created reviews that would reflect the themes that my film would portray e.g sick, twisted and spine chilling. I think that these words are effective in creating an image of shocking horror in which i learned from the BBFC site is what attracts a horror audiences. I used the idea of the sun newspaper and changed its name to the moon with the the following review ‘scariest film of the decade’. I strongly believe that this would entice an audience  as every will be intrigued to no more and obviously with a review like that it would spread word of mouth. I didn’t use a lot of writing in my poster as when i was researching i found out that audiences would much rather be presented with images and visual effects rather than information such as institutional references. I included the most relevant information in my poster, therefore i cut everything down to words as they have a much more powerful impact on the audience.

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

When other people viewed my trailer, i got much positive feedback. The believed that it had great potential for a horror film and found the clown very frightening and realistic as it could pass for a doll, and they also liked the fact that the house was made to look creepy and eerie through the use of scary clown ornaments. They also said that it left them wanting to see more and wanting to know more about what it was about. They also used words like eerie, creepy and suspenseful to describe my trailer, which were obviously themes i was hoping to highlight. It also made people laugh, with the clown pushing the woman through the door and moments when the clown was hooting the party horn. I did combine the use of horror and comedy together, as a few people did comment on the fact that they felt the trailer had a bit of a ‘Clockwork Orange feel to it. The further explained this was due to the bizarreness of it along with the lively music whilst portraying scenes of violence. People were also fascinated by the shot of the key hole and thought this was a good idea, and were asking how i created that shot. I created this by cutting out the shape of a keyhole on a piece of solid cardboard.  The last scene proved a favourite as they liked the use of the music cutting of at the end and then the camera switching to a shot of an old fashioned clock and the noise of it ticking complimented the next scene, as it built up suspense and made the scream sound more louder and shocking, as it went from silence to a scream that people describes as going straight through you. I didn’t receive much negative feedback which i was really pleased with, but it there were some aspects they might change it would be to maybe have more camera angles presents with a few more scenes of action, that would be shown in the the form of snap shots. I also agreed with this comment.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I have used many different forms of technologies in the process of my work. I’v used the internet for researching information about production audiences on the BBFC website during planning stages. I found this very useful as it i gave me a better understanding of what production company would produce my film and what conventions are used in order to attract a horror audience. I also used youtube to watch other existing horror trailers and then uploaded my own trailer onto it as a way of transferring my work onto my blog. The fact that blogger could have direct links to you tube was very useful as it had simple transaction to move the information to one format to another.  I used a blog as a way of presenting my work but found many difficulties in arranging the order in which my work will be presented, as I've never used a blog before. When it came to creating a poster and a magazine front cover, i used photoshop as a way of distorting images and photos. This was very useful in allowing me to make small changes such as adding different tones of colour and altering shapes that can effect the way in which the poster or magazine looks e.g. dark and sinister through use of horror theme colours that have either been exaggerated or heighten to create different moods. When it came to creating the title of the film on the trailer and the production company, i used ‘Motion’ and ‘LiveType’, which allowed me to change the font of my writing and add effect to it in order to contribute to the theme of the trailer for example i used a yellow child like writing for the title of my trailer, which represents the happy clown theme and then i changed the first letter of each word red in order to reflect the horror theme of blood and gore. It also allowed me to use the shaky affect, which i could use to compliment themes in my trailer for example at the end of my trailer i have‘ Coming Soon‘ that it presented on my screen in red and shakes to match the sound of a cackle. When using final cut pro I’ve learned how to cut images in a way that does not give too much of the plot away and leaves the viewer to wanting to see more. I uploaded my footage from a cannon tape camera that i used to film footage and create the existence of a variety of different camera shots and angles. All in all i believe that my trailer, poster and magazine front cover compliment each other well and meets the audiences expectations of the original horror conventions that are necessary in order to shock and scare.

What would i change?

If i was too do the project again i would make sure that i would leave myself more time on each section of the planning, in order to prevent the situation where half of my work deleted, including my trailer, leaving me with a vast amount of problems at the last minute. I have gained many skills from carrying out this project, such as use of photoshop tools to alter and enhance areas of my images that i was using for my poster and magazine front cover. I have also gained a much more in-depth knowledge of horror trailers an how they are used to entice their audiences. I also now have a much better understanding of how to use final cut pro, which will be useful for future activities.

Horror Trailer

working script

Working Script

In the beginning of the trailer, the camera will reveal close up shots of clown ornaments, whilst the sound of a telephone is ringing in the background. The camera will then cut to a long shot of a woman answering the phone. I will then introduce the production company which will be ‘Gorey Productions present’ and then cut to a medium shot of the phone on the floor of its hook, whilst you can hear its dial tone going off. I will then cut straight to the title ‘The clown room’, still with the sound of the dial tone present.

My music to my trailer will start at this point and there will be a close up shot of an eye looking through a keyhole, which then leads to a long shot of a woman sitting on a seat. She is reading a newspaper and the camera is looking through the window at her, in order to create the sense of being watched. It will then cut back to the close up shot of the eye looking through the key hole once again. A long shot reveals the woman walking through a kitchen; she has a very curious look on her face and is looking at her surroundings which suggests that it is not her familiar with them. A long shot of her then walking up the stairs cuts to a close up of her hand that gradually moves towards the handle of a door, which she then turns and opens slightly.

When the door opens it reveals a long shot of a boy sitting on the floor, we can only see the back off him but can make out that he is playing with a bouncy ball, but then he gradually turns his head around to reveal his face. This will also be a point of view shot. We see that there is some kind of mask on his face and as he goes to lift it up, but as he goes to the camera then cuts to couple of snap shots of which reveal a close of a clown ornaments. The music then stops at this point and we see a medium shot of the woman handing a photo to a young boy and she says ‘Whose this?’

At this point there is change in music, when a shot of a clown face is pressed up against a glass window, and his eyes are moving from side to side. The camera then cuts an empty staircase where both the previous woman and boy enter and start to run down them. This will be shown from a low camera angle. They stop running when they get mid staircases, as they look up in shock to see something that scares them and causes to panic and stumble backwards. The camera then swiftly cuts to a long shot of a clown at the bottom of the stairs, which is blowing a party blower, and gradually walks up the stairs pushing away anything in its path. This will be shown from a high angle, and also a point of view shot.

An over the shoulder shot, also long of the woman and boy reveal them with very anxious and fearful expressions on their face. The woman is then forcefully pushed through door by the clown, therefore exits the cameras view from the right side. A close up shot of the boy is then shown, and it appears that something has caught his attention and he is looking down at something, this then quickly cuts to an over the shoulder shot of the woman standing in a door way and is staring at the boy who is playing with a ball on the floor. The boy has his back turned to her therefore he is not aware that she is watching him.

A medium shot is used to show the clown sitting with its legs out on the floor, in a still position that creates the image of it being a doll, the shot also continue as a pan that goes from top to bottom.  Another pan shot is then used to reveal part of the clown room, and this shot goes from one side to another. The music then instantly stops and the camera cuts to a close up shot off an old fashioned clock ticking. The final shot is a medium shot off shut curtains. The back of a woman from the waist down is then shown in this shot, and she gradually moves towards the curtain with her hands held out and ready pulls them backwards. There is a sound off a heartbeat at this point in order to heighten the tension in which is being created. The woman then pulls the curtains back, and then this cuts to a black scream where only a woman’s scream can be heard. Lastly, the words coming soon will flash up on the screen preferably in the colour red.

What is the target audience for horror films?

The target audience for horror films would have to have a strong heart as the norm for horror films are shocks, surprises and suspense. The audience for horror films would also have to be not easily distressed or disturbed as in many horror films including my own there could be distressing scenes that could cause psychological harm to those who are not ready or do not enjoy this genre of movie. Of course the audience also has to be older especially for the film trailers I looked at and my own one as the BBFC, the company in charge of giving movies their certificate ratings says if there is horror meant for a child it must be mild peril and there must be a good positive resolution to it in the end. Therefore true horror films have to be for an older audience as in a lot of the horror situations there is not a positive resolution especially when characters die which is majority of the time. As well as this the target audience obviously must enjoy being frightened, made to jump, being in suspense and open to being shown disturbing scenes or situations, as many of today’s horror films are getting more imaginative as to how to “punish” their victims and to scare the audience in ways they would not expect, which is what being scared is all about.

Production Company

When looking at different production companies to produce my film I wanted one that had a lot of experience in production films with a horror genre, so that they could use their experience from other films to benefit mine. A really good company I found was Hammerfilms which had produced numerous horror films in the past and was their speciality; however all the films they produced were very long ago and they haven’t done a recent one. I therefore disregarded this company as it would not be as experienced with newer film production techniques as some. So I chose to use Twisted Pictures the company who produced “Saw”, showing they can use all the latest production techniques and think of new innovative ways to show present the film. This company also produced “Childs Play” a film I looked great depth in to and gave me inspiration for my trailer therefore making it similar and adding to my reasons for choosing “Twisted Pictures” as my film production company.

Stephen King’s IT Trailer

The name of the film is told to us at the end, like majority of other film trailers so that the title of the film sticks in your head last and you remember it. But the title of this film is said twice once by putting it on screen and the other an actual scene from the film in which “IT” is written in blood on a wall giving it more chance of being remembered as it is not the usual way a title of a film is presented.

We are not told who is starring in the film all we are told is that it was written by Stephen King who many people are a fan of and would see the film because he wrote, so there is no need to try and attract people by promoting and well known actor and there will be some who the trailer has persuaded to see it because the film is by Stephen King.

The action shown in the trailer is majority thriller as it shows the actions made between the clown and the characters trying to avoid it. However they show hoe demonic the clown is in a lot of the scenes used and there fore it can be said that all the scenes are thriller/horror action meant to take the interest and catch the eye of those who enjoy this genre.

The speed of the scenes shown in this trailer are the same speed they would be shown in the film, however the trailer shows many of the high pace action/horror type scenes such as the people screaming and the clown dragging the boy down the street drain and so the trailer itself can be considered high pace. This could have been done to just show the audience what they can expect if they go to see this film and to show them the pace it will be at so that those who do not like or do like this type of speed can react accordingly to the trailer.

The speed of the scenes say the same, however the first scene showed is a little girl playing and then a clown appears and the scenes after are all the horror scenes where all action happens so the pace of the trailer changes to faster livelier pace. This probably reflects the style the film is shown as I imagine it would have slower scenes to build up the tension and then faster action scenes to realise that tension in a scene with a lot happening.

There is not much information given by the trailer about the film other the fact that it is about a demonic clown that torments different people in a number of different ways for example coming out of the drain while the man was in the bath. Of course we are also given an idea of the type pf genre the film is just by the style of the scenes shown throughout the trailer and the way there characters are presented, even the way the title is presented at the end all point towards what type of film this is.

This trailer is aimed at those who want to see a horror/ thriller film due to the scenes shown, which are the thriller scenes which majority young children would not like and of course an older audience would probably not be affected the same way, this is probably 15+ maybe 18+ depending on the way the clown disposes of the characters. This trailer is also not aimed towards those with a phobia of clowns and this would obviously be a film and even a trailer they would not want to see due to the fact that a clown is the main agonist throughout the trailer and movie. On the other hand though this trailer is aimed at those who enjoy Stephen King and his work as it comes up with his name when the trailer shows the title.

Nightmare on elm street poster

The image shown in the poster tries to convey a mood of fear and suspense as it shows the main villain of the film looming over a woman who the audience can tell from her face is terrified. It is also trying to get the audience to see this is going to be a film full of anxiety and a film full of suspense. The colour scheme of the poster is very bold with a mixture of dark colours, the black and bright colours to really show the contrast and details of the villain. The colours they have used, black orange and red also really get the idea across that this is a horror film as they are typical horror as black for darkness and red for blood. It also suggests that the film is going to be very intense as the colours it uses are presented and the image of the villain stalking the young girl is intense as well. The image shown on the poster is also intended to “tease” those who enjoyed the first set “Nightmare On Elm Street” movies and it teases them by showing the main character is back but he is silhouetted possibly suggesting that he has a new look or that something is different about him. This could make some people go see the movie so as to cure their peaked curiosity to see if this villain is the one they remember from the older films past.

There is no mention of those who star in the films and the only face that is shown is not really shown clearly because of the dark colours. This posters main selling point and the thing they are trying to promote is the villain as this film is a re-make and the original had a very large following and the main character, the villain was extremely well known so they are promoting the fact that he is back in it rather then the quality of the stars of the film.

The tagline on the poster states “he knows where you sleep” showing the audience that this film will have something to sleeping and possibly dreams. This also gives that impression that the villain in this is somehow super powerful and he is a supernatural being which brings in the audience of those who enjoy superpowers or weird things in the films they watch.

The attention gained by this poster is different ways depending which of the audience this poster appeals to is looking at it. Those who are a fan of the previous movies will feel excitement and pleased to see that the films they loved are being remade and possibly improved. However the style of the poster with the colours the way the characters are presented on the poster, the villain looming over the victim would entice those who are looking for a suspenseful horror film as it is quite obvious this is the genre of movie due to its slightly frightening tagline the colour of blood and darkness used and the history of the “Nightmare On Elm Street” films before this one.

Stephen King's IT poster

The images shown on this poster convey a number of different ideas and emotions on to the audience. As the pictures at the bottom of the screen show the actors but no names this shows that the poster wants you to focus on the images of them and possibly think about whether there is a relationship between these people and to speculate what it is. There is also the main image on the poster and that is of the clown which is usually a cheery figure in society who brings comedy, however the clown is rather demonic in this image making this a kind of oxymoron. It also gives a clear image of the antagonist of them film which may take away from the suspense but it contributes as it grabs the attention of those who see the clown character and are quite interested by it. Also it looks like on the poster that the clown has ripped his way on to it with his green demon hands like he is trying to get out of the poster and trying to get to you, involving the audience in the poster and makes it a bit different to other posters so it will stick in the audiences mind as something out of the ordinary. The clown is the main colour on this poster emphasising that he is the main item of focus on this poster and the main attraction of the movie. The white background could also symbolise innocence and the clown is ripping it apart and taking its place.

There is no mention of the people who are staring in this film, however Stephen King the author is mentioned and he is very well known and has a quite a large following of fans so the poster could be trying to attract those fans in to seeing the movie. The poster wants the audience to focus mainly on the clown and the movie title which is presented in red on a white background to make it really stand out and also to possibly insinuate that this will be a bloody gory film was the only word in red is “IT” who is the antagonist.

The tagline says “the master of horror unleashes everything you were ever afraid of” which really heightens and highlights the clown is very skilled in the horror workings. It also promotes the idea that this film has a very high horror level as they promote their villain being the master of it, this use of language excites the audience that want to watch the film because of its horror genre. The tagline also suggest that there is going to be some phobia exploiting as it states everything you were ever afraid of, of course this film is already playing on phobias as there are those who are afraid of clowns. However this uses of language would also excite those looking for a really terrifying film and possibly appeal to the audience of those who are really picky with their horror films as it suggest that this film is offering a bit of everything in the horror department.

This poster uses both visual and verbal to entice and excite their audience. They uses subtle promises of master horror to catch the attention of the hardcore horror enthusiasts and it uses the visual to catch the attention of those who are maybe not as fussy about their films, as the visual is very eye catching and it seems to offer something different with a rather unusual choice of antagonist.

Drag me to hell poster

The image used on this poster is supposed to be very eye cathcing and to peak the audineces intrest and there is a lot on the poster to catch a variety of peoples eyes, as it shows demon hands taking a attractive woman down to hell. The woman screaming is the biggest image on the poster so that’s what they want you to focus on as they want you to see the terror on her face to really show the audience just how frightful being dragged down to hell is and the fact she is screaming up can suggest she is screaming to heavan in relation to the film title which could entice those who look at this poster in great depth to see if their assumptions are correct. The main bold colours are of the women the fire and the demon hands dragging her down to hell higlighting that these are the things the movie want you to focus on rather the the backround which is dull grey like colours but still there to show the audience that this film takes place in average little town rather then possibly a supernatualr place like the title of the film could suggest. As well as this the poster does not show clealy who the villian is in this film as it only shows demonic hands which are still very threatening and teamed with the fact that they are pulling her into “the fires of hell” is sufficient enough to be show the audinece a true threat and to catch the peak the intrest of those who wish to know why she is being draged down to hell and just who or what is actually doing it.

There is no mention on the poster as to who is starring in the film because they are trying use the image on the poster to catch the peoples attention and persuade them to see it. Rather then telling you who is starring in it they just have the main character showing where fans or her acting could tell its her and see it because of her. On the other hand the audinece who do not know her would have to be persuaded by other means to seeing the movie.

The tagline in this film explains some of the plot to the story and shows a twist at the end of it, as it starts out talking about a happy peaceful life for the mina charcter and switches it to talking about going to hell. It catches the audiences intrest by taking this unexpected turn and makes the sudinece want to know what brought this turn about for the main chaaracter, and for those who do want to know what makes this happen for the main character it leaves them in suspense making them want to see the film that much more.

This poster is focusing on it the visual side more then anything as it is evident that they out a lot of design effort and time to really make it eye catching and intresting and to really peak the intrest of those that would be intrested in a horror style film. It also opens up a number of questions for those who really look at the poster such as “why are the hands grabbing her necklace” and it is these questions influenced by the visuals and the other techniques which would make people go to see this film to see if their questions can be answered and just because it looks like a horror suspsense film appealing to those who like that genre.

Clockwork orange  trailer analysis

We are told the name of the movie just 10 seconds in to it and are shown flashes of the title throughout the trailer.  This could have been done so that the audience remember the name of it and the way that is keeps flashing on the screen at random intervals could signify that the film will be completely random and chaotic like the trailer. The title of the film is also shown at the beginning, where it is shown after each adjective used to describe the film. This could have been done to show the audience that this film has all the adjectives used in it such as funny it has funny sides to it and bizarre it is going to have some bits that may not make sense and may seem complete random.

We are not told the who is staring in the film at all during the trailer the only person who is mentioned is the director, Stanley Kubrick and even when he is mentioned his name is only mentioned with the title of the film showing that this trailer is not focusing on promoting the stars and those who participated in it. This could have been done so that people will be attracted by the scenes they see and the fact that it is very eye-catching rather then the people who are appearing in it.

In the trailer we see a number of different kinds of actions: we see violent and slightly disturbing actions such as when one of the actor’s eyes is being held open with hooks as someone else goes to out a knife to it. We also see a number of different people laughing which could suggest a bit of comedy or it could suggest that there are simply scenes that the characters in the film find funny whether they are comedy or violent or anything else.

There is no voice over used at all in the trailer, this may have been done so that the audience would focus and what they are seeing rather then listening to a voice over. Also the fact that there is no voiceover in this film shows that the scenes and the other techniques used in this trailer to get people to see the film are very powerful and also must be very persuasive.

The speed of the trailer is very fast and the trailer itself is very busy with a lot of fast pace actions and all of the scenes from the film themselves have been fast forwarded and played at a much higher speed such as the scene with the girls at the carnival as they walk and each much quicker then I imagine they did in the film itself. This could have been done to show just how face paced this film is and how this film has a lot of things happening at once in it as it all seems a bit chaotic.

The speed stays the same throughout the whole trailer sticking to its incredible fast pace, possibly to show that the action from this film is from beginning to end and it never slows down there is always and some form of action in it at all times.

During the trailer the only information we can gather about the film is by seeing it as there are no words spoken by a voice over. However throughout the trailer many adjectives come up on screen to get the point across that this film will have a lot of different aspects to it and rather then just focus on one genre they will focus on many. This information is given throughout the trailer as the words keep appearing; this repetition is probably used to just get the point across that this film has many different aspects and angles to it.

This trailer is aimed at an older audience, 18+ and also aimed at those who want to see a thriller film with some comedy and would not mind to see a disturbing scene. This trailer is very diverse as it says in its words that it will have many different genres; however there are a number of disturbing violent and unusual scenes shown so it is not aimed at those who don’t like to be scared or are easily offended or disturbed.
